Hello friends!
I recently built a little entertainment system that allows me to play my old Nintendo and Super Nintendo games without digging the consoles out of their graves. It was fun and I want to make more!
I seriously want one too! What it is
More than a Nintendo Classic
This little box is more than a Nintendo Classic alternative. It gives you the ability to play Super Nintendo and many other console games you grew up on.
For the techies, I’m installing the Recalbox OS, which is a newer fork of RetroPie.
This has emulators for:
- Nintendo
- Super Nintendo
- Arcade
- Playstation
- Genesis
- Game Boy
- Game Boy Advance
- Game Boy Color
- Atari 2600
- Atari 7800
- Lynx
- Sega CD
- Sega 32X
- Sega SG 1000
- Game Gear
- Master System
- more…
More than a gaming system
Also included is Kodi, a video streaming application that enables watching movies and tv shows. Yes, this isn’t just for playing games!
The parts I use

Console
I use the coolest case I could find for a system like this. A cute little mini Nintendo match.
The brains of the system use a Raspberry Pi 3 Model B with heatsinks. The board has built-in wifi & 4 USB ports. If you’re not a geek who knows what that is, just know that it’s a cool computer board for building cool stuff like this.
The software is kept on a 32 GB mini SD memory card. Since the cheap ones are flaky, I use a highly rated SanDisk brand card.
Power supply
Since the system doesn’t have a power button by default (you’d have to unplug it to turn it off) I use a power cord with a button to turn it off. Much more convenient!
Game controllers
2 Super Nintendo style controllers that connect to the console by USB. These could be used for games on your computer too!
HDMI Cable
A standard HDMI cable to connect it to your TV is provided.
Keyboard/Trackpad
For an additional $35, I’ll include a wireless keyboard with integrated trackpad so you can use it from your couch. I use the Logitech K400 Plus, which is one of the highest rated and least expensive options.
Note: A keyboard is required for some of the setup, searching in Kodi and exiting games without restarting the system. If you don’t have an extra keyboard lying around, I highly recommend this!
Documentation
I’ll provide documentation on how to use it, including how to add games. I don’t want to make a full time job of providing a support line but if there’s something you can’t figure out, let me know and I’ll try to help.
Is it legal?
Yes. I did some research and found that I can legally sell pre-built systems as long as I don’t sell the software. Part of my time and effort will be for helping you install it. So, if you felt like you didn’t want to risk getting into any trouble, I’ve confirmed you’re fine. As a matter of fact, here’s a Canadian company that does it: http://tinyconsole.com/faq/
If you want to tell your friends about it, that’s fine.
Cost of parts + my time and effort
Console package | $150 |
Wireless keyboard with trackpad | +$35 |
Shipping for non-local | +$10 |
Since I have to order the parts and then put it together and then ship it to you if you’re not able to pick it up from me, It could be a couple weeks before you get it. In the days of Amazon prime it feels almost shameful to say that but that’s a realistic expectation.
Payment
Pay with PayPalTo pay me, you can send money to my PayPal account. I’d appreciate it if you paid in advance so I can use it to pay for the parts.
Email me at mmickelson@gmail.com to give me your address for shipping or other questions. I’ll get started as quickly as I can.
I thought about making options for the case, controllers, etc. but I’d rather keep it simple.
This is a fun project to make yourself if you have the time and want to do the research to purchase the parts. If you don’t like or want to dig in to the technical stuff you make this yourself, this is for you.
